How To Season Cast Iron Cookware
Make sure your piece is completely clean before beginning this process:
Place your cast iron in the oven and heat it to 450 degrees F.
Keep it in the oven until that temperature is reached
Now carefully remove it from the oven until it is just cool enough for you to handle it using your bare hands without the use of pot holders.
(This process will help ensure your piece has a uniform color)
Using Crisco shortening, use a cotton rag to apply a very thin coating over the entire piece. (Ultra-thin coat)
Place your piece back in the oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. (Check the piece after 10 minutes - if any "pooling" occurs on the piece, wipe it with the cotton rag)
At the 30 minute point, turn the oven off and leave it in until the piece cools down completely.
It is reccomended to repaet this process at leat twice, if not three times.
